Time-of-use tariffs

Time-of-use tariffs are variable prices for electricity, established based on the time of day when the energy is consumed. Instead of a single rate throughout the day, consumers pay a different price depending on the demand level in the grid, giving them the opportunity to save on their bills.
In the smart metering demonstration project, consumers can benefit from time-of-use tariffs, calculated based on the time when electricity is used. This approach allows for cost optimization and more efficient use of the electricity grid.

 Time intervals set by ANRE

Thus, ANRE has approved tariff coefficients, that will be applied to determine the prices for electricity supply to end consumers involved in demonstration projects. The following time intervals have been established:

High consumption periods

from 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM and from 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM

Base level consumption period

from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Low consumption period

from 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM

By aligning the time intervals for consumers who choose to apply differentiated pricing based on consumption hours, and for consumers involved in demonstration projects, the technical and operational difficulties in implementing both mechanisms within the IT systems managed by operators will be removed, and the process of data collection and management for electricity consumption will be streamlined.

What are the benefits of switching to time-of-use tariffs?

You have more control over how you consume energy with the help of smart meters

You pay less if you adjust your consumption to hours with lower rates

You use energy more efficiently, avoiding grid overload during peak hours

How to optimize your energy consumption for lower bills?

Changing your consumption behavior can help you save on your bills and use energy more efficiently. Here are some practical tips:

Shift consumption outside peak hours

  • Use high-energy appliances at night or during lunch hours. Washing machines, dryers, electric water heaters, and dishwashers consume a lot of power. Schedule them to run between 11:00 PM – 7:00 AM or 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM, when rates are lower.
  • Charge your electronic devices at night. Laptops, phones, and other gadgets can be charged during off-peak hours.
  • Use heating and cooling efficiently. If you have air conditioning or electric heating, set them to work more intensively during off-peak hours to maintain comfort without excessive consumption.

Optimize the use of appliances

  • Use energy-saving programs. Washing machines and dishwashers have low-energy options that use less water and electricity.
  • Avoid leaving devices on standby. TVs, laptops, and other appliances continue to consume energy when they are only turned off with a remote. Unplug them.
  • Set your fridge and freezer to the correct temperature. An optimal temperature (freezer at -18°C and fridge at 3-5°C) prevents excessive consumption.

Take advantage of natural light

  • Use natural light as much as possible. Open the curtains during the day and avoid unnecessary lighting.
  • Improve home insulation. A well-insulated house retains heat in winter and coolness in summer, reducing the need for heating and cooling.

Monitor your consumption

  • Check the data provided by your smart meter.
  • Compare your monthly consumption. Identify periods of higher consumption and adjust your habits accordingly.

Choose energy-efficient devices

  • Look for appliances with an A++ or A+++ label. These consume less energy and are more cost-effective in the long run.
  • Use LED bulbs. They have a longer lifespan and consume much less energy compared to traditional bulbs.

Changing your consumption behavior does not mean sacrificing comfort, but rather using energy more efficiently. Smart meters and time-of-use tariffs give you the opportunity to save effortlessly. By applying these tips, you will reduce your bills and contribute to a more efficient and sustainable energy system.
